Taking its name from the Paris Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925, the Art Deco style was the last word in design for a generation. Using characteristic geometric or stylised shapes and patterns, early Art Deco works were made of costly materials such as ivory, lacquer and jade, their ownership restricted to the wealthiest of buyers. With the advent of the Great Depression, designers turned to economical mass-produced materials such as bakelite and aluminium. This led to a widely affordable Art Deco range of furniture, kitchenware and household appliances, that has come back into fashion many times over the years. A major influence on the architecture of the twenties and thirties, the Art Deco style can be seen in a wide range of private, commercial and public buildings worldwide. Art Deco is the complete illustrated history of an unusually influential design concept.

The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention

From the 1940s to the 1970s, the Los Angelesbased husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames practiced design at its most virtuous and its most expansive. Their furniture, toys, buildings, films, graphics, exhibitions, and books all aimed to improve society, not only functionally but also culturally and intellectually. The essays in this handsome and generously illustrated volume examine the Eameses' projects in the contexts of science, corporate patronage, and politics as well as those of modern design, architecture, and art. Partial to Home: A Memoir of a Charmed Life by Bob Timberlake, ISBN 1878086812

Bob Timberlake was 28, married, with three children and a good job in his family's propane gas business, when he came home from work one night and sat down to browse through Life magazine. In it, he came across an article about the painter Andrew Wyeth that was to change his life. Although he'd never had an art lesson or set foot in an art gallery or museum, he was suddenly certain that he was destined to become a painter. Thus was Timberlake set upon an incredible journey that in just a few years would see him become one of America's most successful realist painters, his works fetching high prices and exhibited in prestigious museums. His art not only led him to know presidents, movie stars, the future king of England, and other powerful people but pushed him to become one the world's top 10 designers, creating the most successful furniture line in history as well as many other products, including a new line of Timberlake homes. Yet Timberlake never felt responsible for his successes.... Partial to Home: A Memoir of a Charmed Life by Bob Timberlake, ISBN 1878086812
